Where can I get free topsoil in Medina, Ohio?

From whoever is moving it: builders stripping a lot before they dig, excavators on a basement or pond, crews regrading a driveway. Those piles cost money to haul away, so plenty of people would rather hand them to a neighbor. On Dirtly they show up as pins near Medina when they exist, and a standing "want" post is how you hear about the next one instead of the last one.

Is free topsoil really free?

The dirt usually is. The moving usually is not. A pile you load and haul yourself genuinely costs nothing, while a delivered load is priced on the trucking, not the soil. That is the whole shape of this market: the material is cheap or free and the transport is the real bill, so the closer the pile is to your project, the more the word "free" actually means.

Do I need topsoil or fill for my project?

Fill if you are raising ground, filling a hole, or building a base — it compacts and stays put, and it is far easier to get free. Topsoil if something has to grow: it is the few inches on top that seed and roots live in. Most projects want fill underneath and a topsoil cap over it, which is why ordering topsoil for the whole depth is the commonest and most expensive mistake.

Free topsoil in Medina, Ohio

Free topsoil comes from people, not stores. It turns up when somebody strips a building lot, digs a basement or a pond, or regrades a driveway, and it leaves on whatever schedule that job runs on. That is why there is so rarely a pile sitting there the week you go looking.

Around Medina more people are looking for dirt than have any to spare, so the ones who get the good topsoil are usually the ones already posted when a lot opens up. Post once, and when topsoil comes loose near Medina, it finds you.

October is the last comfortable month for regrading and seeding before the ground gets cold, so anything needing to be moved is usually moved now rather than in November.

Topsoil is sold and given away by the cubic yard, and most people overestimate. The calculator turns length, width, and depth into a number, and the grass seed calculator works out the seedbed if this is for a lawn.
