Helotes sits at the northwest edge of San Antonio where Bandera Road meets Loop 1604, a small city that marks the start of the hills. New homes on steep lots, pools, retaining walls and commercial pads along SH-16 keep crews busy, with Leon Valley to the southeast and Grey Forest up the road to the north.
Helotes Creek winds down out of the hills through town, past slopes of hard limestone with very little soil on top. The rock here is riddled with karst and small caves, so excavation is slow and careful. Excavated material is mostly broken limestone, while softer creek soil and gravel sit along the bottoms.
October rains return, and a single storm can shut down grading on the east side clay for most of a week. With the heat easing, hillside and pool jobs in the northern suburbs pick back up.
