Sandy Oaks is a small city in south Bexar County, between US-281 and I-37, where the metro gives way to brush country and scattered homes. The work here is rural: house pads, septic systems, driveways and fence lines on lots of an acre or more, plus the occasional stock pond or new road.
True to the name, the soil is deep, loose sand under live oak and mesquite, simple to dig and fast to drain but prone to washing on any slope left bare. Beneath it sit clay layers that hold water in a wet spell. Elmendorf is east, and the Medina River bottom curves past to the north.
October rains return, and a single storm can shut down grading on the east side clay for most of a week. With the heat easing, hillside and pool jobs in the northern suburbs pick back up.
