Timberwood Park is the hill country neighborhood past Stone Oak on the north edge of Bexar County, off US-281 beyond Loop 1604. Homes go up on wooded slopes, and nearly every lot needs a cut for the house, a retaining wall, a driveway on a grade and often a pool, with Bulverde beyond it and the city spreading up from the south.
The ground is limestone almost to the surface, with pockets of thin, rocky soil and karst that can open into voids. Much of this area drains toward the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone, where state rules govern how sites are cleared and graded. What gets dug out is largely broken rock: good base, poor topsoil, so garden soil is trucked in.
October rains return, and a single storm can shut down grading on the east side clay for most of a week. With the heat easing, hillside and pool jobs in the northern suburbs pick back up.
