Poteet is an Atascosa County farm town south of San Antonio on SH-16, best known for its strawberries. Most earthwork is rural: house pads on acreage, stock ponds, field work and farm roads, plus a few new streets for people who commute north. Pleasanton lies to the southeast, and Jourdanton to the south.
The farms here sit on sandy loam, light and well drained, the soil that made the strawberries possible, with redder, sandier ground on the rises. Clay lies deeper down and in the creek bottoms. Spare topsoil from a pad or pond dig is good growing soil, which makes it easy to give away to the next farm over.
October rains return, and a single storm can shut down grading on the east side clay for most of a week. With the heat easing, hillside and pool jobs in the northern suburbs pick back up.
