Jacksonville is a Cherokee County town on US-69 south of Tyler, where the highway meets US-79 and the railroad. Most earthwork is steady rather than large: commercial lots on the highway frontage, a few new streets of houses, and pond and pad work on the acreage that surrounds the town in every direction.
The hills here are red with the iron ore that runs through them, and road cuts show red clay and ironstone just below a sandy top layer. Lake Jacksonville sits to the southwest, and the Neches River bottom, low and prone to flooding, runs along the county line to the west.
October closes the dry hauling window before the winter rains return. House pads and driveways on new acreage around Lindale and Mineola are pushed to finish while the ground is firm.
