Kilgore sits on I-20 between Tyler and Longview, a town built by the East Texas oil field, with derricks still standing downtown. Industrial yards and pads along US-259 and the interstate, new houses at the outskirts, and oilfield service work keep dirt moving, and much of it travels short distances to Longview and White Oak.
Soils run to sandy loam over clay, with patches of ironstone in the higher ground and deep sand in places that drains almost at once. Old oilfield leases leave scattered pads and roads that get regraded when land changes hands. The Sabine River runs north of town, its bottomland broad, wet and wooded.
October closes the dry hauling window before the winter rains return. House pads and driveways on new acreage around Lindale and Mineola are pushed to finish while the ground is firm.
